When I moved in, my neighbour advised me to ask for information about local services in a Haringey library. I now visit every week to use the computers, or pop in to a class and catch up with friends!

Key information
1. Your local library offers access to computers & internet, printers and more
Aside from accessing books, CDs, DVDs and online courses, most libraries also offer a range of other services including:
- Free access to computers and the internet - you usually need to book in advance
- Access to printers - you usually need to pay a small fee
2. Your local library is a great source of information about Haringey
You can find out all kinds of information from asking for directions, learning about healthcare services, to getting to know local community groups and how you can get involved:
- Most libraries have a noticeboard where you can check the latest information
- Some libraries offer additional services like support to find work
3. Most local libraries offer free or low-cost classes for people of all ages
Each library offers different activities and sessions, but they usually include:
- Community clubs and classes to build your skills e.g. English language classes, computer skills
- Programmes for children aged 6 and under
4. You need to register with the library to access their services
It’s quick, easy and free to do! You will need to complete a form and show some basic documents (‘proof of identity’ and ‘proof of address’) to be issued with a library membership card.
Step-by-step guide
Registering with a local library
-
Step 1 - Find your local library
Keep in mind that some libraries only register people who live close by. To find your local Haringey library:
- Search online by entering the postcode of your address online here
- Search in a free navigation app like Google Maps - enter ‘library’ in the search bar
-
Step 2 - Prepare your documents
Most libraries will ask you for documents to show who you are and confirm that you live in the local area:
- ‘Proof of identity’ - a valid passport, full EU photocard driving licence or National Identity card
- ‘Proof of address’ - usually a household bill dated within 3 months (see ‘Organising documents & registrations’ for more details)
-
Step 3 - Make an application using a new form for each family member
If you are not confident in English, you can ask someone to help by printing and completing the form in advance if available from their website, or visit with you on the day. You will need to provide:
- Basic details e.g. your name and address
- Your areas of interest - so they can direct you to the relevant services
-
Step 4 - Have your application processed
Some libraries can do this on the same day while others take a few days. The receptionist will tell you how long it will take and how they will contact you to confirm your registration and send your library card. You will usually be offered a day pass so you may use their services while you wait for your application to be processed.
-
Step 5 - Start using the library services!
You usually need to book in advance to use their computers or internet, and to attend classes. Otherwise, enjoy the services and don’t forget to check the noticeboard for updates about what is going on in the area.
